The mesquite tree (Prosopis species) is native to the dry regions of the Americas, where communities have used its pods and wood for centuries. Over time, this hardy, drought‑resistant tree travelled far beyond its origins — including to South Africa, where its story took an unexpected turn.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mesquite trees were introduced to South Africa with good intentions. They were planted to help reduce soil erosion, act as windbreaks, and provide shade in harsh, arid landscapes. The climate of the Northern Cape and parts of the Karoo suited mesquite perfectly, allowing it to thrive with very little water.
As mesquite spread, it began to reshape local ecosystems. Its deep roots allowed it to reach underground water sources, giving it an advantage over native plants. The tree also produces large quantities of seed pods, enabling it to spread quickly across grazing land and natural vegetation.
By the mid‑20th century, mesquite had become a major focus of land‑management efforts in several South African provinces.
South Africa later classified mesquite as a species requiring active management. Various approaches were developed, including selective clearing, biological control, and — importantly — resource utilisation.
This last approach opened the door to innovation: using the abundant seed pods to create new, sustainable products. One of the most successful examples is MannaBrew, a roasted beverage made entirely from mesquite pods. By collecting these pods, communities help limit their spread while transforming a challenge into an opportunity.
In rural towns, seasonal pod harvesting provides meaningful income and supports local initiatives. What began as an environmental challenge has become a source of empowerment, craftsmanship, and connection.
Through careful roasting, mesquite pods reveal a smooth, caramel‑like flavour with nutty undertones — the foundation of MannaBrew. This single‑ingredient beverage offers a naturally caffeine‑free roasted alternative that is now enjoyed far beyond South Africa.
A tree once introduced for practical reasons has become part of a new, thoughtful food tradition.
